Challenge

Strängnäs municipality choose ETTELVA, along with NCC, to build a new travel centre. ETTELVA’s primary goal in the design of the new travel centre was to signify a new, bold identity for Strängnäs. The project has been nominated for building of the year in Sweden and received a lot of public interest.

The foremost challenge for this project was in the development of efficient, cost-effective construction detailing, in close cooperation with NCC, whilst also meeting the high architectural expectations of Strängnäs municipality. The travel centre also had to meet the stringent requirements of the Swedish transport agency and EU regulations, such as BBR.

Solution

The transport hub is placed over a new double rail track that runs through a hub of kiosks, commercial properties and a waiting hall. The transformation of the station area has created a safe and amenable passage for commuters switching between car, rail and buses.

Result

The vision was to create a modern and bold architectural statement that could function as a landmark for the region. Design principles, such a visible, framework construction and glazed, transparent facades were brought forward through close consultation with the municipality’s objectives. The travel centre is consciously place with a view directed at the historic cathedral and functions as a gateway that links the town’s two major regions. A roof lantern brings natural light deep within the building.
